One of my favorite things about being Greek is getting involved with philanthropies throughout the year! For those who are new to Greek life or thinking about rushing, philanthropies are events held to raise money for a particular cause or charity. Every sorority and fraternity will hold an event and everyone is welcome to take part and help raise money. For my sorority Alpha Gamma Delta, we raise money for diabetes research and the alpha gamma delta foundation, and we hold a golf tournament (which is way more fun than it sounds) and we partner with a fraternity and hold an event called Water Daze. I wish I could give you more details on what Water Daze is but this will be my first year participating so I have no idea what’s to come.
Believe me I’m not as athletic as I used to be and somehow I make it through the events. Now not all of the philanthropic events need physical activity but, those are the ones that are really fun. They are also a great way to bond with your sisters and other organizations that are also participating.
A couple of my personal favorite philanthropies would definitely be Watermelon Bust (a competition of events that all include watermelons) which is held by Alpha Chi Omega and Delta Tau Delta, as well as Riley Dance Marathon but I really do love participating in all events. Yes, they all cost money and most of us are broke college students but you are helping a greater cause and having a great time all at once!
