It's Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus: How to Create an Original Costume

Get ready, get set, Halloween is just around the corner! But deciding what to dress up as is always a challenge. It is the never-ending debate between choosing a traditional costume or a recent pop culture phenomenon!

This year, take your Halloween by storm and express your humor and interests to create your own costume! The best way to dress yourself is by taking advantage of local stores and consignment shops. These local stores will have unique pieces that no one else will have. It also allows you to build your outfit into exactly what you want it to be as opposed to ordering a standard costume in a one size fits all bag. Be sure to choose a costume you’re in love with too! Even though everyone will understand a MTV Music Video Awards Miley Cyrus costume, you may not feel comfortable in it. Pick an interest of yours and own it! Even if it’s a little off the radar, you will stand out and be able to tell people all about why you chose to be that costume. These are great conversation starters! Be sure to take advantage of your friends as well! Group costumes are always a fun way to make your Halloween more memorable.

If you’re looking for inspiration, a couple great resources include American Apparel and Ragstock. American Apparel has great examples on their website of using individual articles of clothing to create your own unique look and any Ragstock near you will have an abundance of costume ideas on mannequins throughout the store! Just remember, be confident, be unique, and be you!
