When going through recruitment, I heard every sorority woman talk about “philanthropy.” I had a hard time even saying the word, let alone knowing what it meant! I soon learned that each sorority has one charity that they raise money for. They also attend other organizations’ events as well! These are always super fun to attend with your sisters, and here is why!
You laugh, you cry, you have a really really really good time. When it comes to philanthropies, emotions can get the best of you sometimes, which is a good thing! You have fun, while knowing you are supporting a good cause.
**Bonding with your sisters. ** What’s better bonding then making a team for an event that makes you do some pretty silly things? My sisters and I had to have a dance off one time…in front of about 3o people…talk about embarrassing! But, at the end of the day, that little embarrassment is worth it.
**You find a new passion. ** After attending Dance Marathon, a lot of my sisters decided to join their committees and help raise money for children’s hospitals’ even more! My chapter alone raised over $4,000, which is pretty exciting!
It sets your chapter to a higher standard. Giving up a night of going out to do a philanthropic event the next morning sets your chapter apart from others. You are seen as a leader on campus and seem passionate about your roles as a sorority woman.
* **It’s rewarding. ** My chapter’s philanthropy is The Arthritis Foundation and Dystonia research, and before our big dodgeball tournament, we have an AOII alumni speak about her struggles with Dystonia. This always hits home, and you realize that all your efforts are going towards a good cause.</ol>
Don’t be afraid to go above and beyond for philanthropic events whether it is your chapter’s event or not. Get as many teams as you can to sign up and have fun!
