I always wanted to be in a sorority. Not because I wanted to have a house that was all fancy. I wanted a place where I felt like I belonged. A place where I could meet new people and become close friends with, a home away from home essentially. A sorority is a place where girls come together to better themselves and give back to the community. I found a place where I can now do that. A place that I can call my second home, Alpha Phi. Alpha Phi is a new chapter to Iowa State University, which mean that all of the members now are founding members! This is an exciting opportunity for us as we get to experience every event for the first time together.
Today was Alpha Phi’s bid day. Since we are a new chapter we had to do an informal recruitment that took two weeks. Today was finally the first full day we could call ourselves greek, members, sisters. I found out that bid day is an amazing experience. I’m sure that our bid day was a little different than formal bid days, however, it was just as amazing. We all met up at the campanile on central campus and received our bid day tanks. I found some paint and decided to paint my face, and then add glitter to my hair and arms. Along with our shirts we received floral head bands that were tied in our hair. We all looked so adorable!
To make my experience great while I was there, I decided to mingle with other girls in my chapter to try to get to know more girls since I only knew a select few. It was great to be able to include some of my other sisters whom I didn’t know too well in my photos. I took it as a mini-bonding moment. I wandered around joining in in as many pictures as I could.
Excitement rushed through me as we were escorted behind the campanile to await the big event; we were about to run out and be greeted by every sorority on campus! I grabbed the hands of the girls next to me as we ran laughing and screaming for joy! It was an amazing feeling to be greeted by so many chapters who were just as excited to welcome our chapter to the campus.
For those of us who went through formal recruitment, our Rho Gamma’s were there to great us as well! We all gathered around on central campus as our Rho Gam’s started singing for us along with each chapter. I was so excited taking pictures everywhere I went to make sure I captured a lot of good moments that I will remember forever.
After all of the events with the other chapters, we gathered around for a professional photo-shoot. This was our first few photos as members of Alpha Phi. After the photo shoot we were escorted to the south ballroom inside the Memorial Union. Here we had another chance to get to know some of our sisters as we had a small dinner and cake. To make the evening even more special, my mother delivered me flowers to the event to congratulate me on making it in to Alpha Phi.
From this experience I can say that I am in the running for having some life long friends. People who I can go to for anything at anytime. I can’t wait to start my year as an Alpha Phi and spread our love across campus. This night was truly a night to remember.
