20 Lessons Learned After First Semester Freshman Year

I am currently sitting in my gate at the train station waiting to leave college and go home. Fresh off from turning in my last final, there is now a month without any obligations separating the end of first semester and the start of second semester. College was a definite jump from high school and the first few days felt like quite a shock. But as I got acclimated and learned my way around, everything fell into place. Here are some things I learned and wish I knew before the end of first semester.

  1. Sleep is infinitely more important than I thought it was.
  2. I probably should have utilized my TA’s office hours more.
  3. Eating meals alone sucks but you WILL find friends to eat with.
  4. Homesickness does go away eventually.
  5. Don’t waste dining dollars and/or meal swipes as tempting as off campus dining may seem.
  6. Studying would have been a lot less annoying if I had just reserved a study room at the library.
  7. Don’t feel pressured to join clubs the first month of college.
  8. One bad grade does not mean you’re going to fail the class.
  9. All nighters are not worth it or effective. Spacing out my studying was the way to go.
  10. Thank God for my sorority’s test bank. Use anyone’s test bank. Just use the test bank.
  11. FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) is only real if someone’s having more fun than you.
  12. Your high school friends will fade but the good ones will keep in touch – hold onto them.
  13. Sometimes it’s okay to binge watch Netflix.
  14. Sometimes it’s also okay to binge eat Ben & Jerry’s.
  15. Retail therapy is supposed to be short-term catharsis… it’s not supposed to put you in debt.
  16. I found out that mom’s way of missing me is sending me care packages of fruit.
  17. You can wear all black anywhere and it’s completely socially acceptable.
  18. Class registration is a war that I am now somewhat more prepared for.
  19. I learned that I cannot brave an 8am class but props go out to the people who can.
  20. Signing up for recruitment was THE best decision I ever made.
