Just because I am now a Grandbig doesn’t mean I am done spoiling my littles, and soon to be grandlittles! As exciting as getting Littles is, it is not without its challenges! The difficult part is balancing your overwhelming desire to shower your Little in love and gifts with the reality of a college bank account. Because of this, and my experience with having twins (two of everything-twice as much love but also twice as expensive!) I figured I would share my budget friendly tips to spoil your Littles without breaking the bank!
The first thing I suggest is talking to your Big and Grandbig and seeing if they have any sorority apparel they don’t want or use anymore! Since there aren’t as many opportunities to wear tanks and t-shirts in the real world, what is better than putting them to use by passing them on down through your lineage? Another benefit of getting things from your Grandbig is that no one else in the chapter will have it! I loved having one of my Grandbig’s tank tops- it was cute and unique and it also had history!
You don’t have to go out and buy canvases and try to be the next Picasso- your little is going to appreciate the effort more than the artistic talent, and posters are a great way to show your little how much she is loved! All you need is a little bit of time and luck! Remember, even if you’re not an amazing artist, it really is the thought that counts!!
Another quick and easy craft is glitter wine glasses! I got wine glasses and then used Elmer’s glue to glitter them! There is no way to mess this craft up, and even the least crafty girls out there can make these! Glitter wine glasses are simple, beautiful, and definitely something that your little will appreciate!!
Also, you should get creative when you’re getting crafty- I cut up an old cardboard box into a kite, wrapped it in gold wrapping paper, and colored it with sharpies to make door signs for my littles! I then covered the rest of their door with post-it notes full of love and little messages. Don’t be afraid to really get resourceful and use what is around you- you’ll be surprised at how inexpensive crafting can be if you are resourceful enough!
Canvases are a great addition to any Little’s room, and there are so many ideas on Pinterest that anyone can find a design they like! From chevron and glitter initials, to cute sayings or pictures, canvases are a gift your Little will treasure forever, that costs more time than it does money!
Frames are my favorite craft! I have painted the Lilly Pulitzer Theta print on frames, I have glittered frames- there are so many options when it comes to creating a frame! Instead of leaving the frame empty, a great tip is to put a cute sisterhood quote in the frame and then after Big-Little reveal, give your little a picture of the two of you to go in the frame!
Streamers and Balloons are like glitter, they don’t cost much, and they can do so much! Covering your little’s room in streamers and balloons may be a mess for her to clean up, but it’s a mess she will love!
My last piece of advice for being a great Big is to splurge on a single piece of jewelry for your Little! I bought both my Littles necklaces, and they wear them all the time. A Big-Little relationship is a lifelong commitment to each other, and jewelry is a great way to give your little something lasting, that she can wear to remind herself of you, and that will last long after the glitter has fallen from the wine glasses and the paint on the canvases has faded. You don’t need to spend a fortune on jewelry though, there are a lot of affordable options, my current favorite being Alex and Ani sorority collection bangles. Priced right around $30, these bracelets are a beautiful lasting reminder of your love and sisterhood.
Expanding your family truly is the most exciting part of the entire year, and there’s nothing better than starting out a lifetime of love with the best Big-Little week ever!
