Dorm Decorations: 6 Ways to Spice Up Your Sleeping Space

If you go to a school anything like mine, your dorm walls are probably either cement blocks or painted an incredibly dull shade of “ew”. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Both my freshman and sophomore year, my dorm room was anything but ugly because I refused to live in a boring room for 9 months. I spiced my dorm room up for extra cheap (college budgets, have no fear) and I’ve even taken these tips and used them in my house off campus these past two years, too. So if you want ways to spice up your dorm life, read on!

1. Christmas lights

Hanging Christmas lights in your dorm room is the easiest way to create a home-y ambiance in your dorm room. Chances our, your room has awful lighting, so Christmas lights will not only brighten up your room during the day, but also allow for a dim, relaxed feel to your room at night. And they can also act as a nightlight if you’re into that kind of thing (I am, it’s fine).

2. Pictures

Putting pictures throughout your dorm room is a great way to add a little something to the bland walls and probably really ugly furniture. Having photos in your room will remind you of people you may miss from back home, or remind you of the great times you’ve had with your friends at school. Frames are such an easy way to decorate your room, add a little color, and spice up your living space! You can even take my approach from my sophomore year and combine Christmas lights and pictures all in one. I hung picture frames from my lights with clothespins- I received tons of compliments on this idea, and I must say, my dorm room looked like it came straight out of Pinterest.

3. Wall decals

Wall decals are easy to use and a super easy way to add a little something to the walls of your dorm. They don’t pull off the paint, so you won’t get charged for damages, and a lot of the time they’re reusable as well! I’ve used wall decals for three of my four years in college. I’ve had decals of the Eiffel Tower as well as some with motivational sayings (my personal favorite way for a daily pick-me-up!).

4. Accent rugs

If your dorm room has anything but hardwood floors, consider yourself lucky. Investing in a cute, versatile rug for your dorm is a super simple way to add some color to your room and also make it feel more like home. A good rug will last you for years, so definitely consider splurging on one in order to make it last.

5. DIY Crafts

Sorority girls are no stranger to crafting, so what better way to show off your skills than hanging them up in your dorm? Paint some canvases, hang up your paddles from your big and little, or craft some letters and throw them on your walls! This is a super easy way to decorate your room, but also show off your Greek life pride!

6. Curtains

Chances are, your dorm room has some uuugly blinds. Check with your residence hall to ensure this is allowed, but hanging up curtains is an easy way to turn your dorm room into a bedroom. A couple yards of cute fabric should do the trick, and it shouldn’t be too expensive either. There’s tons of DIY curtain tutorials on Pinterest, so get to crafting!

No matter what way you choose to decorate your dorm room, it’s so important to make your dorm a place you enjoy living! After all, you’ll be there for a solid 9 months. Spice up your dorm room life and make your room the hangout spot in your hall!
