Bid Day. That light at the end of the tunnel after the long and stressful process that is sorority recruitment. If I’m being honest, my hopes weren’t entirely that high for bid day. It had nothing to do with the house I was hoping to be in-it was more that I didn’t realize it is quite possibly one of the most exciting days of my life. It was one of those things that I heard over and over again during recruitment-“OMG you’re gonna LOVE bid day, it’s so exciting and fun!!!”-seemed to be a huge topic of conversation.
At my school, Michigan State University, we do bid day a little differently. All the PNM’s gather at The Rock, a staple on campus. All girls have to sit on their bid cards before that unreal moment where they open them up.
The moment I opened my bid card was one of the most exciting moments of my life. This excitement caused me to rip my bid card completely in half. Sitting on my bid card that day, I was so anxious to open it. But the second I did the joy I felt was like nothing I’d ever experienced. I saw those three words on the top of that card and knew my college experience was about to get a lot better.
After we open our cards, we run to the spot our new sorority is standing in. Everyone rushes to siblings or friends or girls they talked to during rush. Seeing that mutual joy on their face when you run towards them is just another reason why this day is so exciting.
By far the best part of best part of bid day is looking over to my best friend and seeing that we ended up in the same house. Even better? I knew that even if we ended up in different houses, we’d still stay just as close as we were.
But the new friendships I made are some of the most incredible parts of being in a sorority. These are the girls who opened up their bid cards and felt as much joy as I did on that day. I can proudly look at these girls with as much happiness as I did a year ago; so incredibly thankful that they were brought into my life.
Could you tell I am excited about my house?
